Every year on 14 October, World Standards Day recognizes the people and organizations working together to develop standards that make our world safer, more connected, and more resilient. For the PCI Security Standards Council, this year’s celebration carries special significance: for 20 years, we have been setting payment security standards that help protect payment data around the globe.
Since the Council was established, payment technology has evolved rapidly. New ways to pay have created greater convenience and opportunity, while also introducing new security challenges. Through it all, PCI SSC has brought the global payments community together to develop and evolve standards and programs that help organizations secure payment data across technologies, channels, and regions.
For two decades, PCI SSC standards have provided a common foundation for payment security. They give organizations practical, actionable frameworks for protecting account data, strengthening security practices, and responding to a constantly changing threat landscape.
But standards do more than define requirements. They create a shared language for security and support collaboration across the payment ecosystem. The strength of PCI standards comes from the collaboration and expertise of stakeholders around the world—including payment brands, financial institutions, merchants, service providers, technology vendors, assessors, and other security professionals.
PCI SSC's standards support payment security across a wide range of technologies, environments, and processes throughout the payment lifecycle. From payment data protection and secure software development to payment devices, encryption, authentication, and emerging payment technologies, these standards provide a framework for strengthening security across the global payments ecosystem.
Effective standards depend on people who understand how to apply them. That is why training and education are essential parts of the Council’s mission. PCI SSC training programs help payment security professionals deepen their knowledge, build practical skills, and better understand their role in protecting payment data.
From foundational learning to role-based qualification programs, PCI SSC training supports professionals at different points in their payment security journey. By helping people understand both the intent and application of PCI standards, these programs strengthen implementation and promote a consistent approach to security across the global payment ecosystem.
World Standards Day is an opportunity to celebrate what shared standards make possible—and to recognize the community behind them. As we mark 20 years of PCI SSC, we thank the stakeholders, Participating Organizations, trainers, assessors, and security professionals whose contributions have helped advance payment security worldwide.
